10/03/2010

Iran is offering an opium tincture as a means of treating the country's 1.2 million addicts, The National reported Wednesday (March 10th). The tincture will be available at treatment clinics and has proved effective in treating addicts. An estimated 80 percent stay off the drug following the tincture protocol, said an official from Iran's health ministry. Iran wiped out poppy and opium production following the Islamic revolution in 1979. But a shared border with Afghanistan offers a supply for young people. The opium addiction rate in Iran is the highest in the world.
