Winners of Lebanese American University Students Choice Awards 2009 honoured at UNESCO Theatre awards ceremony

Students at the Lebanese American University distributed more than 6,000 ballots in a poll to select Lebanon’s stars of the year in the arts and media who they would honour at a UNESCO Theatre awards ceremony.

It opened with winners arriving at the theatre and posing together for photographers. Fares Karam, who won the award for best Lebanese artist, posed with Marwan Khoury (best general artist) and Joseph Attiya (best new artist). Assi Al-Rahbani, son of composer Ziad Al-Rahbani won the award for best director for his film “Beirut … Beirut”, but was absent from the ceremony owing to the death of Mansour Al-Rahbani just days earlier.

Other awards went to TV presenter Neshan as best talk show host, Marcel Ghanem as best political show host, Sirin Abdulnur as best actress, Yusif Al-Khal as best actor, and Hadi Shararah as best composer.

Nancy Ajram, named best Lebanese female singer of the year, chose to enter the UNESCO Theatre through the backstage entrance and waited on the stairs while the students announced her award. Her manager Gigi Lamara said she was tired because of her pregnancy and was unable to stand for long periods of time. The singer, however, later got on stage to dance to her latest single "Betfakar Fi Eh" (What You Are Thinking About), to the amazement of the stars and audience whom Nancy had deemed it excessive to greet or even sit among.
