AMMAN – The Jordan Football Association named Iraqi Adnan Hamad to succeed Portuguese coach Nelo Vingada to lead the national team during its next phase, which includes qualifiers for the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar.

Vingada did not succeed in getting the team to the final stages of the Asian qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup, which resulted in Jordanian officials not renewing his contract. Another factor in the decision was the team’s poor performance in recent matches including a 2-1 loss to a relatively weak Singapore team in an Asian Cup qualifying match.

Official spokesman for the Jordan Association Ayman Haroun confirmed that the contract will be signed next week after agreement is reached on financial details, Hamad’s authorities under the contract and the new coach’s nominations for a crew to assist him.

Haroun said the choice of Hamad was approved by president of the Jordan Association Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein based on a proven track record of achievements which include leading the Iraqi Olympic team to a fourth place finish in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Hamad also led the Iraqi team to the quarter-finals of the 2004 Asian Cup in China, and was named the Best Coach in Asia in 2005. He was, however, sacked from his post after the Iraqi team was eliminated in the first round of 2010 World Cup qualifying matches.

Hamad expressed delight about his new post, saying, "I am happy with the Jordan Association's trust and with the support of Prince Ali, and I am proud to become the first Iraqi to coach the Jordanian national team. I have confidence in the Jordan Association's seriousness about providing me support... and I hope to bring back respect and prestige to Jordanian football.”

The Jordanian public is attaching great hopes to Hamad, particularly in light of the upcoming difficult 2011 Asian Cup qualifying matches, which include two games against Iran in November.
