DUBAI – On May 13, the 12th graduation ceremony of the new American University of Dubai (AUD) honoured 400 graduating students at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
American University Executive Vice President Elias Bousaab opened the ceremony by saying, “We are lucky to live in the United Arab Emirates and in the city of Dubai, which enjoys a sophisticated infrastructure, security, safety, and a visionary leadership that looks to the future.”
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, UAE vice president and prime minister and ruler of Dubai, presided over the ceremony. The main commencement speaker was former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell.
In his address, Powell expressed his admiration for the university’s efforts to promote development in Dubai and to transform the United Arab Emirates into one of the leading nations of the world. In speaking about the city’s progress and revitalisation, which he said put it on equal footing with New York, London and Paris, Powell also praised Sheikh Mohammed’s wisdom and humanity in overseeing that transformation.
In his speech, Sheikh Mohammed congratulated the graduates on reaching a new phase in their lives and voiced the hope that the graduates would continue their education to bring their goals and aspirations closer to fulfilment.
Sheikh Mohammed said the best investment a country can make is in education, knowledge, culture and research, because it places people at the forefront of government strategy. Such investment increases the prospect that individuals will become sources of positive influence in society.
Graduates received bachelors degrees in business administration, engineering, visual communications, information technology and interior design. All degrees the university offers are accredited by U.S. education institutions.
