DUBAI – Dubai is preparing to join competitors who want to host the 2020 Olympic Games. If successful, they will be the first Olympic Games to take place in the Middle East. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashed Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, announced that this initiative will be known as “Dubai 2020” and aims to strengthen the social and economic sectors to allow the UAE to host the Olympic Games.
A government of Dubai official specified that the plan will add development and infrastructure projects throughout the UAE and task citizens, residents, and officials with specific goals to be implemented to advance the chances of hosting the Games.
Public Authority for Youth and Sports in Dubai Chairman Ibrahim Abd Al-Malik said, “The Olympic Games is the biggest sporting event in the world and the highest sporting goal to which any country can aspire. Our application to host the games will require long hours of work and preparation. The UAE has hosted big events in the past, however. With the support of our leaders, I believe that we will be successful.”
A specialised group has been charged with developing a business plan before a proposal can be submitted to the International Olympic Committee. The working group will include members from the private and public sectors and will serve under the leadership of the Falcon Organisation, which was established to attract investments to Dubai.
Dubai’s hot summer weather could pose one of the biggest challenges to Dubai 2020. The temperature can rise above 40 degrees Celsius in July and August that decrease to an average of 39 in September and 35 in October.
The next Olympic Games will take place in London in 2012.

Although I am a Saudi national, honestly, the UAE is qualified and deserves this, especially Dubai. It has the potential for success and prosperity. The only disadvantage that they have is the heat and humidity. This is God's will; the people have no control over it. Planning for residential areas in close proximity to the location of the tournament will solve this problem. Thank you.
