CAIRO – Just a day after he declared to the press the hope that the stumbling Egyptian team would reach the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, on July 5, Captain Ahmed Hassan helped it secure a 3-0 victory over Rwanda.

Egypt was hoping to benefit from its dazzling performance in the Confederations Cup last month when the Pharaohs nearly defeated the much-feared Brazilian team and upset Italy, the current world champions.

In the qualifiers for the final round, Egypt found itself last in its group after it tied with Zambia, 1-1, last month and lost to Algeria, 3-1, putting them and Rwanda at the bottom of Group Three with only one point each.

Before facing Rwanda, Captain Ahmed Hassan said that Egypt had to redouble its efforts if it hoped to reach the World Cup. “We took a tough loss against Algeria last month,” he said, “The players know that their performance was not good enough. We can’t place the blame on any one individual; all of us were responsible.”

The first half of the match progressed without incident. The Egyptian national players maintained possession from the early minutes of the game, but did not manage to pose any major threats to the Rwandan goal. Despite the slow first half, the Pharaohs were able to score in the 65th minute when famous Egyptian striker Mohammed Abu Trika scored against Rwandan goalkeeper Jean-Claude Ndori. In the 77th minute, Egypt’s Hosni Abd Rabou scored a penalty kick.

In the final minutes of the match, Abu Trika scored a third goal, launching the Egyptian team into second place in its group with four points, one goal over third-place Zambia.

The Algerian team leads the group with seven points, and Rwanda remains in last place with a single point.

God willing, we will make it to the World Cup. We don't have luck with the World Cup, though. Every time that we enter it, it seems that the Burmese are doing the calculations.
