Amman – The Jordanian national basketball team gained a spot in the Basketball World Cup finals that will be held in Turkey next year. The team took third place in the 25th Men’s Asian Cup for Basketball Tianjin, China when it defeated Lebanon 80-66 on August 16.

Iran was crowned the champion of the Cup after its victory over host China, 70-52, in the finals. During the tournament, the Jordanian team also beat Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan and Qatar.

The Jordanians played against Lebanon under the leadership of American-born Rashim Wright who scored 12 points of his 28 points in the third quarter to lead Jordan to the World Cup. Point guard Ayman Dais scored 20 points, landing six of his eight three-point shots, and demonstrated his star quality.

The Jordanian team’s Portuguese coach Mario Palma told reporters after the victory, "We were able to nail our shots today. Our players were not nervous. They said that this is the day; that they would fight to advance to the World Cup. We played a great game."

This was the eleventh time the Hashemite Kingdom participated in the Asian Games since it joined the league in 1983, but marks only the first time in its history that Jordan has qualified for the Basketball World Cup finals where the team will be joined by China, Iran and Turkey, which will host the tournament next year.
