SANAA — Yemen has refused an offer by Iran to help Sanaa end its struggle with the Houthi rebels, saying that the matter is an internal one for central authorities to resolve.
Iranian Foreign Minister Manoucheher Mottaki said Iran was “ready to cooperate with the Yemeni government and other nations to restore order and stability in Yemen.” The Iranian offer came one day after Tehran warned Middle East governments against intervening in Yemen’s internal affairs, saying, “Those who would fan the flames should know that they will not escape the smoke.”
In a related development, Yemen army spokesman Col. Askar Zuail accused the Houthis of trying to drag Saudi Arabia into a regional war that would serve the agenda of unspecified major regional powers. He said Iran had been generous in its backing of the Houthis’ extended six-year rebellion. Zuail pointed out that during armed clashes with Houthis, the Yemeni army had uncovered bombs and ammunition believed to have been manufactured in Iran, and added that a number of Somalis were being hired at nominal wages to dig trenches and erect barricades.
This latest development in Iran’s approach came just days after Yemen and Saudi Arabia were offered broad support by a number of other states in the region. On Nov. 10, Kuwait’s Minister for Cabinet Affairs issued a statement strongly denouncing the activities of the Houthis who invaded Saudi territory. Bahrain also issued a statement supporting the measures taken by Saudi Arabia against the Houthi rebels, despite a controversial parliamentary vote opposed by 17 Shia members.
Suspicions remain surrounding the possible involvement of Iran with the rebels in Yemen. Many believe Iran is arming the rebels, and Sanaa has frequently accused Tehran of supporting the Houthi conflict.

Who benefits from this war, besides weapons dealers and those who support the Antichrist? These people are unknown to us. We are blocked from much of the media. Are we living in the era of the appearance of Al-Mahdi and the great battle?
