Kuwaiti singer Nabil Shuail has been a popular artist in the Gulf since his musical debut in 1982. He is probably best known for his song "Ma Arwaak" (How great you are), as well as "Ya Shams", and "Shoufi Gheirou."
His nickname is the "Gulf Nightingale" and his concerts in Kuwait and abroad sellout quickly.
He released his last album "'Nbim Shuail" in 2007.
Away from music, Shuail, 48, can be found in his salon, Tarban Studio. He meets friends, singers, composers and lyricists to exchange ideas about music or watch the latest football tournament.
Al-Shorfa spoke with Shuail about how he decides which dialect to use when he records a song, and the connection he has with his audience.
Al-Shorfa: What are you working on for the near future?
Shuail: I am on the lookout for lyricists and composers to prepare my next album. I am inclined to select my songs carefully because I want to offer something new for my fans.
Al-Shorfa: Will Kuwaiti artist Bashar al-Sheti write lyrics or music for you?
Shuail: It is not clear at the moment, but we're listening to a lot of new music from all over the world and in different genres. I still do not know what is going to happen, but I'd like to co-operate with him.
Al-Shorfa: You sang in Egyptian and Lebanese dialects. Which do you prefer?
Shuail: Each dialect has its own taste. The Egyptian dialect opened the gates of fame in the Arab world. Later Arab listeners became familiar with my songs in the Gulf dialect. "Ma Arwaak" is one of the songs that contributed to my success. I sang in Lebanese dialect because I love Lebanon and spend my annual vacation there with family. Even if I am booked during the holidays, I return to Lebanon right after giving my concerts.
Al-Shorfa: Do you think about singing in new dialects, such as Moroccan, as other singers have done?
Shuail: There are no plans in this regard, but this does not mean I do not think about it. If good lyrics and music become available, I will take this step without hesitation. At the end of the day, we're all Arab brothers.
Al-Shorfa: When you perform, you dominate the stage and the audience frequently sings along with your songs. How do you do that?
Shuail: The listener's love is the foundation of success for any artist, not only in the Arab world. I like to be closer to the audience. During a concert, I make sure to go onto the stage from the spectators' side so that they feel the closeness and the love I have for them and encourage them to interact and tune in to the songs. In Kuwait, I am careful to start my concerts with the national anthem, which the audience likes.
They also request songs by titles like "Oh home". I rehearse all my songs before the concert to meet everyone's requests for songs they like. Even if a song is new and was not rehearsed, I would answer the request so that they feel happy.
Al-Shorfa: Are there any planned concerts this summer?
Shuail: I will be in London for a month, and I will spend another month in Beirut before returning to Kuwait at the end of Ramadan to spend Eid al-Fitr with my family. I am not scheduled to give any concerts over that period.
Al-Shorfa: Away from work, how do you spend your time?
Shuail: I am always at home with my family, sons Shuail and Abdelwahab. Apart from that, the studio is where I meet all my friends. This was the main reason behind opening this studio at the beginning of 2009.
