Iraqi security forces have arrested a number of individuals believed to be behind terrorist attacks near foreign embassies last April and other attacks in Ninawa and Diyala.

Baghdad operations command spokesperson Gen. Qassem Atta said Iraqi forces arrested 16 individuals in connection with the bombings that targeted the German, Egyptian and Iranian embassies, including the group's leader Mubarak Ahmed Abbas.

"Mubarak, who was arrested by the Iraqi forces, is a senior official in al-Qaeda and his task was to bring gunmen to his house at al-Qadisiya neighbourhood, west of Baghdad, so as to supply them with vests of explosives and car bombs to carry out their terrorist acts in the capital", Atta told reporters on Tuesday (May 4th).

During the press conference, he showed a video tape showing Mubarak training a young man named Hassan in how to wear a vest of explosives and recite slogans that precede the execution of a suicide attack. He said that Fallujah police killed the young man who appeared in the tape while trying to blow up a bridge in the city.

Atta said the suicide bombers who carried out the attacks on the embassies were all Syrian nationals. He added that Iraqi forces arrested a would-be suicide bomber who failed to blow himself up on the day of bombings. The 17-year old is Haytham Ahmed Khalaf Mohammed from Syria. He was targeting the Embassy Protection Directorate at the area of al-Arsat in central Baghdad.

Iraqi Ministry of Defence spokesperson Gen. Mohammed al-Askari said that "all the members of the terrorist network that planned the embassies attacks are now in the custody of the Iraqi forces."

Al-Askari added that this network is also responsible for different attacks that targeted government and civilian facilities and public markets.

Meanwhile, Iraqi security forces in Ninawa province announced Tuesday the arrest of al-Qaeda-affiliated "Wali Wulat al-Mosul" (governor of Mosul governors), along with a number of his aides. The arrest was made in joint army and police operation, with the support of the Iraqi Sawlat al-Fursan Brigade in the city of Mosul.

According to Col. Suhail al-Waleed of Mosul Operations Command, Mahmoud Mohammed Salama Bekhit, a Saudi fighter, was arrested after "violent clashes with his escorts and protection elements at a house located in al-Amel neighbourhood, west of Mosul."

According to Maj. Khaldoun Fahim of the Federal Police's 1st Brigade, Bekhit had been arrested in Mosul in 2006, but managed to escape from a police prison in the same year.

"He continued with his terrorist activities in the city by committing crimes against both civilians and security forces," Fahim added.

Security officials said that the Iraqi forces acted on a tip from citizens.

Maj. Saad al-Taey, spokesperson for Ninawa Operations Command, said that "the operation was carried out based on purely Iraqi intelligence effort and implementation and without any assistance from the US forces."

Three police elements sustained medium wounds in the clashes. Dr. Thaer Barakat of Mosul Public Hospital said that the hospital staff "gave the three wounded policemen a hero's welcome and dedicated a suite for their treatment."

"Everyone breathed a sigh of relief after the arrest of al-Qaeda and leader and the mastermind of terrorist attacks in the city," said Sarmad al-Kaznasan, 43, who lives near the place where the suspects were arrested.

"I saw the terrorist with his hands tied up and being surrounded by the police," al-Kaznasan added. "I was proud of our security forces; the head of terrorism in Mosul has fallen today, as its head in Iraq fell a few weeks ago."

In other security news, Diyala police chief Gen. Abdul Hussain al-Shemari announced the arrest of a senior leader of al-Qaeda known as the "emir of Baqubah", aka Hajji Bassim, and three other suspects in a security operation carried out by the Iraqi forces Tuesday dawn at the middle of al-Tahrir neighbourhood, west of Diyala.

Al-Shemari noted that police forces in Diyala carried out the operation "based on confirmed intelligence."

"The terrorist Bassim is wanted by the Iraqi judiciary for his involvement in killing 24 Iraqi civilians and displacement of scores of families in the province. His arrest is deemed another victory for the Iraqi forces," he said.

God the Exalted says: And for every person We have imposed his fate upon his neck, and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open. It will be said, "Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant." -Quran 17:13-14 God the Exalted says: Mention, O Muhammad, the day We will call forth every people with their record of deeds. Then whoever is given his record in his right hand - those will read their records, and injustice will not be done to them, even as much as a thread inside the date seed. And whoever is blind in this life will be blind in the Hereafter and more astray in the way. -Quran 17:71-72

The criminal Osama bin Laden is the mastermind of all evils, and we have to get rid of him, because he is the one who gives the orders to kill and butcher people. This culture has never existed before the appearance of this [offensive]. This [offensive] alleges that he defends Islam, when in fact he is cause behind killing many innocent youths. He also deals in drugs and in people’s lives. What Islam are you taking about, Osama?

I think that the arrests of Al-Qaeda's leaders will agitate all the terrorist elements of Al-Qaeda, and we might witness a stupid reaction from their side, through their challenging of the government by targeting innocent people, as what happened in Iraq after the arrests. That’s in the short term, but in the long term, this will result in eliminating them. It is true, as I mentioned, that they may make a stupid reaction, but it will end within a month or less of Al-Qaeda's leader being arrested or killed, and if they were left, this means their crimes would continue, especially since the leaders are more expert in the implementation of plans. So, arresting or killing them is the best thing. The government, the people and security forces should face their reaction, and after that, terrorism will be ended and destroyed, because they have no more leaders who can lead them as desired and with the experience that those leaders have. At the same time, the continuous arrests of Al-Qaeda's leaders will help in reaching all its cells, because they will be arrested based on the information that will be taken from those leaders and the information about their whereabouts, where they plan and implement attacks, and where they prepare the car bombs. As a result, many of their planned operations will fail, and this will decrease their attacks rather than increase them.

There is great improvement in the security situation in Mosul, thanks to the continuing raids carried out by the security forces against the terrorists, in order to achieve security and preserve it in the city. The security forces continue to carry out their duties, arrest terrorists, and investigate and interrogate suspects. Mosul was one of the governorates that witnessed conflicts due to the presence of terrorists there. Those terrorists assassinated innocent Muslims and Christians as well as Kurds and Arabs, and targeted all the sects, nations and religions in this city. Terrorist elements wreaked havoc in Mosul at the time. Nowadays, the security forces are imposing their control over the city and arresting terrorists one after the other till they rid the city of Mosul of them. Now, Mosul’s inhabitants live differently from the way they did two years ago because of terrorism. The continuation of terrorists' arrests by the security forces shows the progress achieved in their ranks, and their dependence on their sources and intelligence agents spread everywhere.

The arrest of the leading figures of Al-Qaeda is one of the biggest and most significant factors that have inflicted a major setback to the terrorist organization of Al-Qaeda. We have seen the death of the criminal Al-Zarqawi, and later on the capture of the so-called Wali Baghdad, and later after that the death of Al-Qaeda leaders in a single operation which was a successfully planned mission led by the Iraqi security forces, in which Abu Umar Al-Baghdadi and Abu Ayyub Al-Masri were killed, and how all of this has had a significant impact on the collapse of this terrorist organization in Iraq, after it had founded a state under the name of the Islamic State of Iraq, which was the name that the terrorists had given themselves following the unification of all the terrorist jihad movements in Iraq. Those had entered the country after the collapse of the dictatorial regime, and they have perpetrated mass crimes against innocent people in Iraq. However, the security forces quickly reorganized themselves and they were able to mitigate their danger and strike the leaders of this criminal organization and eliminate them one after the other. This demonstrates that our security forces are developing their capabilities at a rapid pace, and that they have a very advanced intelligence apparatus, since these criminal terrorists have been hunted down by all the international anti-terrorism agencies but have been actually caught in Iraq and by the Iraqi security forces.

Terrorism has affected the economy by causing all the government and private manufacturing plants and factories to shut down due to the security situation, which deteriorated very badly during the past years. However, today, we can see the difference that is taking place, as the security forces took all this time to reorganize themselves and their forces, and they cleansed their agencies of the infiltrations that had taken place. Today, Iraq has started to rise to its feet again, and with the eradication of terrorism and the beginning of this new phase, it is expected that Iraq will make up for what it has missed, that it will take advantage of the current security, and that it will invest the oil revenues in a proper manner, in order to serve and develop itself.

It is the duty of the political blocs, which the Iraqi people have chosen and elected to lead Iraq in the current phase, to shoulder the responsibility of the nation and try to bypass all their differences which we are currently witnessing, and to stay away from cheap comments and statements which some of their members make to the media, because this is not in the interest of Iraq, nor are these in the interest of the political blocs and the overall political process in general. All the political blocs should sit together around the same table and at the leadership level, and discuss all their differences, because the time has come to put an end to all them, and to turn a new page for the sake of Iraq and for its poor and persevering people. The specified time-limit is getting close to its end. This shows that Iraq is going through a dangerous phase indeed. They have to take their responsibility seriously, because the Iraqi people have put their trust in them and if they cannot keep this trust, the Iraqi public will not renew their it in them again in the next elections, and they will lose the votes that they have received. Despite the fact that the terrorists made threats, people were not intimidated, and they went out to cast their votes for the sake of Iraq and for their own sake. They thought that these were responsible people and they turned out to vote for them as huge masses which is why they should not be disappointed.

Every day, terrorists are waiting for any opportunity to launch their operations, and to regain control over certain regions, in order that they might set their foot in Iraq once again, after having been driven away, thanks to the great sacrifices made by the heroic people of Iraq, including the security forces and the citizens, who chased these wicked people away from our beloved country. So, we do not want them to come back this time because of politicians and their disputes, as the country is left in a constitutional vacuum. The citizens want the democratic process to succeed as well, in order for the whole world to see, and to project the real and true image of Iraq, and of the sacrifices of its people for the sake of their nation. The Iraqis who went to cast their votes do not want these sacrifices of theirs to go in vain, and they do not want the attention on them to be shifted away from them and onto the political disagreements. The formation of the government should take place as soon as possible, so that it can hold its cabinet meetings and begin its first tasks by thanking the Iraqi citizen and providing him with services, repairing the roads, asphalting them in the various regions, and eradicating unemployment, and providing electricity, water and other utility services, which citizens are expecting from the government.

Today, the Iraqi Security Forces have made carried out heroic acts and sacrifices that no one can imagine. They are making sacrifices and working very hard and continuously to preserve the safety of citizens and the security of the country. The Security Forces, including the police and the army, are deployed all day long, 24 hours a day, to control the streets and look for the most wanted suspects, till they arrest the last terrorist member. Then, we will witness a big change in Iraq as a whole. Today, terrorists are aware of the threat surrounding them, given that the Iraqi Security Forces have become fierce and it is not easy to clash with them nor confront them as they are now ready for any challenge. In every confrontation with the Iraqi Security Forces terrorists were defeated and failed to infiltrate the forces or control them.
