It all began when al-Qaeda recruiters approached Fallujah resident Sobhi Abd and asked him to join their organization in Iraq.
"They told me they wanted to kick the United States out of Iraq, liberate the country, and establish an Islamic regime that would provide a happy life for Iraqis. They claimed that they were concerned about Iraqi lives," he said.
Abd was a member of the group for several years. He made improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and bombs that killed scores of Iraqi civilians and security forces.
The rosy picture the recruiters painted would soon turn out to be the stuff of nightmares.
"It soon became clear that these were mere lies," Abd said. "I only saw heads and body parts of Iraqis blown away by explosions. The terrorists were very far from Islam. And terrorism only brought me anxiety, regret, and insomnia. I got nothing but isolation from society."
In 2005, he was arrested and charged with carrying out terrorist acts and providing assistance to al-Qaeda. He served 5 years in prison, and was released several months ago on good conduct.
He is now writing a book that he says will be an important reference for young people who, for one reason or another, are thinking about joining al-Qaeda.
"I am trying to atone for my mistake and for what I did through my work with al-Qaeda in any way possible," Abd said.
Abd will title his book "Beautiful Snakes." He said the title came to him because terrorists use religion and beautiful patriotic slogans to carry out their criminal schemes.
"The book will be about the brutality of terrorism. It will show young people how committing terrorist acts invariably leads to prison, death, and ostracization by society," he added.
Abd is also trying to set up a civil society organization that brings together "those who repented and regretted their acts with al-Qaeda." He plans to hold conferences and seminars to warn against the goals of al-Qaeda, its tactics, and how it controls young minds.
Hundreds like Abd are today being arrested or killed by Iraqi security forces. A campaign that began two years ago led to the killing and capture of many al-Qaeda members, including top leaders such as Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, leader of al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq, and his aide Abu Ayyub al-Masri. The two were killed in a military operation by Iraqi security forces last month.
"We are determined to defeat all the terrorists and to deal the severest blows to them," said Baghdad Operations Command spokesperson Gen. Qassim Atta. "We will not give them the chance to rebuild their terrorist organization and to threaten the security of our country. We will be prepared for them wherever they go."
When al-Qaeda named a new leader on May 16th, Iraqi security forces predicted that his days would be numbered.
"The military operation will continue to chase all the new leaders of al-Qaeda and their fate will be like that of their predecessors," Atta said.
In conjunction with the security campaign, and to give a new chance to repentant terrorists like Abd, Iraqi Minister of Interior Jawad al-Bolani called several months ago on individuals wanted for crimes of terrorism and violence to turn themselves in to security agencies in return for good treatment and fair trials. Since that time, scores of wanted individuals have turned themselves in.
"Most of those who turned themselves in are regretful and feel the enormity of their mistakes," said Diyala police chief Abdul Hussain al-Shemari. "In the upcoming stage, we will work on opening the door for them to hold seminars with young people in which they would talk about their harsh experience and warn them about working with [al-Qaeda]."
But leaving al-Qaeda is not always easy.
"Each time we wanted to run away from them, declare our regret and return to our homes, they would threaten to kill us by beheading us and hanging [our heads] on electricity posts as they did with many others," said Zuhair Ghaleb al-Ubaidi, a former member of an armed group.
Al-Ubaidi, who spent four years in Baghdad's Central Prison, wishes he avoided this trap. "I have no wish other than God to turn back time five years to avoid falling into the trap of al-Qaeda and terrorism," he said.
Al-Ubaidi was wounded during an armed confrontation with Iraqi forces and lost one of his legs as a result. "This proved to me that I was deceived. What did I get?"
He said he took a decision to leave al-Qaeda because "I realized that they were like the fire that feeds on those inside it. They became like monsters and turned away from the beautiful and patriotic slogans they had declared. It went as far as killing innocent civilians for no reason."
Al-Ubaidi said he is trying to atone for his mistake by advising Iraqi forces in Anbar province on how armed groups think, where they meet, and where they hide their weapons.
"I know the enormity of my mistake," al-Ubaidi added. "I have inflicted damage on our people and our country. I hope that my regret will be a motive to serve Iraq anew."
Issa Khalifa, 35, was released a few weeks ago after serving 5 years in prison for being a member of an armed group.
"I have lost everything: my wife, children, and my house because of working with them. I only reaped the hatred of people -- and their eyes are still full of anger," he said.
Khalifa is trying to rebuild his life. He said the best way is "to declare my regret and to give advice to the young people in my neighborhood about the danger of being deceived by the flashy slogans of terrorists."
In Iraqi dialect, he added, "Be careful, my brothers; do not give them a glass of water to drink, and do not even say hello to them. They do not deserve it."
O people, what was the stance of the Prophet, peace be upon him, towards the hypocrites whose names he knew? He did not kill them, in order not to give the polytheists an excuse to say that Muhammad kills his companions. He did not even send them to prison or expel them, although it was absolutely lawful for him to do so. So, what is the ruling on the acts of those terrorists? I think that those who kill the civilians and innocents because they adopt wrong religious beliefs, must learn at the hands of the well-versed scholars; however, if they realize what they do, then they are hired assassins!
May God bless the honorable mujahidin of al-Qaeda, who fight the US forces and the treacherous Shiite groups.
We all know that Al-Qaeda is a US-Israeli colonial project under the veil of Islam that hides the greatest devil, and its objective is destroying Islam and defaming the Muslims by depicting them as bloodthirsty without the right to do so. This project has only one purpose, which is fighting Imam Al-Mahdi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In fact, dear brothers, come and see how some channels glorify the criminal Al Qaeda Organization and how they hail it through viewing video clips for some explosions and vide clips for beheading innocent people who committed no mistake at all. They killed them just because they are Sunni, Shiite or Christians. I swear by God that Islam is free from them and from their acts. Thanks for everyone who reject Al Qaeda and its supporters.
What is the truth behind Al-Qaeda seeking to control certain sectors of the state to serve its purposes, such as controlling Dhahban Technical Institute in order to produce locally made explosives?
You terrorist. You say that you are a Mujahid, but in fact you are nothing more than a small insect in the world of terrorism.
O you who say that you are not a terrorist but a Mujahid, what kind of Jihad is it that lets you kill your brother in Arabism, Islam or the homeland, or that lets you kill a visiting tourist who came to your country? Where is the security that should be provided to him? What kind of Jihad are you talking about? You say that there should be victims in Jihad! In order to kill one person of those whom you call enemies, you kill ten people of your family or fellow citizens or innocent people. What kind of Jihad is this? Even in French laws, they clear 99 suspects out of 100 if they think that there is only one among them who may be innocent. They release 99 suspects in order not to bear the sin of an innocent man. They forgive 100 because there is one innocent among them, while you kill 99 persons from your country in order to kill only one of those you claim are your enemies. What kind of Jihad is this? Why don’t you join your country’s army and fight through your country’s legitimacy? Why do you join a group of individuals who work in the darkness? Why don’t you work in the light with your country’s army? Doesn’t your country know who your enemies are, that you need to fight? Didn’t your country give permission to this one or that one to enter? How do you kill them in the name of Jihad? Isn’t this permission considered an instrument of safety? Why do you embarrass your government and your people? You may not know the goals of the individuals you’re working with, because they are not sponsored by the legitimate army and the government. The government at least knows its capabilities, while guerrillas do not know their own capabilities or the capabilities of the parties that they are facing. They are stumbling to the right and left. Fear God regarding your homelands and people; and leave governing to those who have the right to rule. "And obey those among you who are in authority.” These are your legitimate governments; not individuals or a group.
It is a pity.
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate… some of the comments are fairly sober and objective, while others are stressful, and it is just internal hatred, irrelevant to the subject. It is true that Al Qaeda has failed in Iraq and has become hated by all, but none of the brothers has mentioned the real cause that made the Iraqis reject this organization. Also, no one mentioned why they caused the killing of innocent people and its negative implications on society, including the increase in the number of widows and orphans. Nobody asked himself why Al Qaeda is obliged to carry out such criminal acts that affect its organization, decrease its affiliates and create new enemies. Nobody has ever asked himself who is the real beneficiary of all these crimes and evil acts… I will answer this question, but I wonder why many do not welcome the idea, but I am sure that the majority understands... Why did the criminal acts of Al Qaeda cover many parts of the world excluding Iran? What is the secret behind the statements of many of Al Qaeda leaders and spokespersons, saying that America, the UK and Israel are enemies, and not mentioning Iran; this despite the size of the criminal negative role played by Iran in Iraq? Finally, did the colleagues hear the news that two military camps were discovered near Tehran, training Al Qaeda members? You should not forget that America is the cause of all this, since if there were no America, nothing like this would have happened. God protect Iraq and its people and relieve its sorrow, God willing.
Al-Qaeda's regular sources of funding seem to be disappearing after the death of Osama bin Laden an...
