Yemeni security forces killed 18 al-Qaeda members in clashes on Sunday and Monday (August 22nd-23rd), according to a statement from the Yemeni Ministry of Defence. Other al-Qaeda members turned themselves in to security officials.

The crackdown started last Friday when security forces, backed by air support, responded to al-Qaeda ambushes that killed 11 soldiers in the town of Lawder in the southern province of Abyan.

Salem Abed Rabbo, deputy governor of Abyan Province, told Al-Shorfa that the latest confrontations have forced terrorists to turn themselves in to security forces. He said mediation efforts to persuade remaining al-Qaeda members hiding out in residential areas of Lawder to surrender are under way, within the framework of the ultimatum issued by military and security leaders.

He said life began to return to normal on Tuesday.

"Terrorists had been hiding in a number of houses in the city, and the security services found in those houses a number of RPGs [rocket-propelled grenades], ammunition and bombs," a statement by the defence ministry said, noting that security and military units would continue their blockade of terrorists and continue to raid their hideouts.

The ministry stressed the importance of monitoring hospitals in neighbouring provinces to look for injured terrorists seeking medical treatment.

Yemeni officials also said al-Qaeda's ranks are collapsing, which has led many members, including leaders, to surrender to the authorities.

"The battle of Lawder and the successes achieved are testimony to the seriousness of the security services in combating al-Qaeda," Tariq al-Shami, official spokesperson of the ruling party in Yemen, the General People's Congress told Al-Shorfa.

Al-Shami said security forces are following a long-term strategy in the war against al-Qaeda, especially since the terrorist organisation changed its strategy to target security and military patrols after security forces thwarted terrorist plots against foreign interests, both at home and abroad.

He said that the capture of a number of al-Qaeda leaders is proof of the crackdown on the terrorist organisation.

"A number of al-Qaeda elements began to give themselves up to security forces following the collapse in the ranks of the organisation, after the crackdown on their elements and after being tracked down by the security services, the latest one being in the district of Lawder," al-Shami said.

"One of the best-known al-Qaeda elements who gave himself up to the security forces is the former Guantanamo detainee and al-Qaeda member, Ali Hussein al-Tays," he said. "The Emir of al-Qaeda in al-Jawf province, northeast of the capital Sanaa, Jomaan Safian did the same and turned himself in to Yemeni security forces in the middle of this month."

Al-Shami said Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh granted Safian one million riyals and a grant for medical treatment to help him treat his father and "to reward him for his new anti-al-Qaeda stance".

Safian announced his rejection of al-Qaeda following a meeting with Saleh earlier this month.

Saleh's support for Safian and other wanted persons who renounce terrorist ties is linked with the president's efforts to promote security in communities, villages, and tribes, al-Shami said.

I think that the reality Yemen is living is full of dangers because of terrorist Al Qaeda presence there and its persistence in recruiting the Yemeni youth. I do not believe that this organization is suffering any kind of breakdown because it is luring Yemeni youth in an intelligent way by provoking problems between the youth and the Government. Besides, Al Qaeda leaders and members have known how to draw themselves off and mix the Government and Huthis together. As a result, they quickly went into a complete disorder and were left in state of war. After that, terrorist members of Al Qaeda have resorted to targeting the infrastructure in order to weaken the country. They also took advantage of the war waged by the Government and incited the youth against the latter. They said it is a mercenary and weak government that follows the opinions of Gulf Arab countries as well as the Western countries and America. I personally believe that Al Qaeda does not suffer any breakdown because it is not facing any big challenge or resistance to prevent its spread together with its ideology in Yemen.

Yes, after the Yemeni Government waged a war on extremists and those who conspire with terrorist Al Qaeda and those who have been recruited by this organization. In addition, the Government has killed many of Al Qaeda leaders who were in Yemen in order to train the youth and recruit the largest possible number of Yemeni youth in this organization. I think that the security forces have led to the breakdown inside beginner Al Qaeda ranks in Yemen. In fact, the organization has collapsed and become helpless since the blow it received was painful and decisive from the beginning after terrorists attempted to destabilize Yemen’s security through threats, sabotage and targeting the infrastructure. Indeed, they thought they are the strongest and they will make of Yemen a base for their terrorist organization.

Yemen is suffering today from internal wars and conflicts, which have weakened its government and dispersed its efforts and thoughts. This gives the opportunity to the terrorist organizations and criminals to move freely and vigorously in Yemen, taking advantage of the Yemeni government's focus on mending the rift on the internal front. Thus, Al Qaeda has become more active, as the tension has increased between the government and the Houthis, who had declared war. And this is not the first time that this organization has declared armed rebellion on the central government. This has helped Al Qaeda to carry out many of its criminal operations, taking advantage of the government's preoccupation with controlling the Houthis' rebellion. This is in addition to the problems in the north of Yemen and the demand for secession by the parties and separatist movements that want to divide Yemen into what it was before the declaration of unity between its halves. This is another factor that has led to the survival of Al Qaeda in Yemen. Thus, I don't think that Al Qaeda is collapsing or is weakened in Yemen. On the contrary, Al Qaeda is stronger than ever before, and it changes its moves and tactics from time to time, in order to carry out the most powerful strikes on the Yemeni government and people.

The focus of the Yemeni people and the government is on fighting terrorism and trying to eliminate or destabilize this terrorist organization. This war that the government is waging against Al Qaeda has contributed to stopping the activity of this organization, which was continuously targeting foreign interests and foreign tourists. This has considerably decreased, or it belongs to the past, which confirms the success of the Yemeni forces in their war against terrorism. Many terrorists and criminals from Al Qaeda are transferring their activities towards the targeting of security forces, the police and the army in Yemen, which shows that they have encountered difficulties and are thinking of taking revenge on these brave security forces. This transformation in Al Qaeda’s activity in itself can be interpreted as a sign of the collapse of the terrorist organization. In addition to that, many important leaders in the organization have been arrested by the Yemeni forces, in their continuous campaigns conducted against the terrorists’ dens in the country.

Al Qaeda’s collapse in Yemen is illusory, because the Yemeni government does not work hard on combating terrorism. In addition, the security forces and the intelligence are performing a poor role in hunting down Al Qaeda terrorist members in Yemen. Therefore, I think that the Al Qaeda organization is still present in Yemen, and will be eradicated unless the government wants to do so. In fact, the terrorist Al Qaeda has recruited some Yemeni youth once again, which proves that it has revived its activity in Yemen anew. I think that whoever says Al Qaeda has collapsed in Yemen is wrong.

God be with you, security officers, against terrorism. May God protect Yemen.

The terrorists have exploited the wrong Islamic education, which is widespread among the Yemeni youth. That is because there is no one to enlighten the Yemeni youth and officially warn them of the terrorist ideology. Therefore, the terrorists found a fertile soil for themselves to establish another branch in Yemen after Afghanistan. We have witnessed how the strong desire on part of the youth and the Islamic movements to join this organization and work with it has destroyed the country and crippled its advancement and progress. The Yemeni government needs to be keener on not allowing its country to fall into this trap, as it needs to wake up. Likewise, the clergy has a key role in warning the youth. The rampant poverty is behind the spread of any abnormal case, such as joining the ranks of terrorism for money in return for implementing the orders of the Al-Qaeda leaders. The deteriorating economic situation in Yemen and the lack of any real opportunity for the youth, as well as the poverty that affects many of them, is exploited by the terrorists in recruiting more youth. The Yemeni government is responsible for the loss of the youth, because it does not care for them properly. The spread of the phenomenon of poverty is accompanied by the spread of the phenomenon of Islamization, as well as the principles promoted by Al-Qaeda. The members of Al-Qaeda try to recruit the largest possible number to their ranks, with their false allegations that assert that this organization aims at defending the religion and the Muslim youth, as well as the adoption of the Book of God and the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace be upon him. However, they are liars, as we saw in Iraq; we saw how the falsehood of this organization appeared after exposing its mean purposes.
