![]() [NOHAD TOPALIAN/Al Shorfa] Lebanon's Banat Taxi service currently has 10 'Pink Taxis' and 15 female drivers. |
Janet Iskandar boasts about being the first woman to drive a "Pink Taxi" in Lebanon, describing her experience as "sweet".
"I loved the idea of "Banat Taxi" (girls taxi) because I love to drive," she says.
Iskandar is one of the drivers for the "Banat Taxi" service that is known in Lebanon as a "Pink Taxi" in a reference to the colour of the cars, which are devoted exclusively to female passengers. The drivers of "Banat Taxi" are becoming a fixture in a profession that has long been monopolised by men in Lebanon.
Nawal Yaghi, 48, who conceived the idea of a taxi service dedicated to transporting women, said that she got the idea following a trip to Thailand. Yaghi told Al-Shorfa "in Thailand, a female taxi driver accompanied me for the duration of my stay there, and I said, 'Why we don't have female taxi drivers in Lebanon?'"
Pink Taxi services originally started in the UAE in 2006. They are also offered in Kuwait, Syria, Iran, Bangladesh and Mexico.
On March 10th, 2009, Yaghi took the first step in her project and began working in an office in the Rabieh area that included three pink cars and five female drivers.
Yaghi said, "We moved to the heart of Beirut, and I now have large offices, 10 cars, 15 female drivers, and hundreds of customers from all over Lebanon, in addition to Arab and foreign customers who book our cars online prior to arriving in Lebanon."
Yaghi said that creating a taxi service for women, with a woman driver, was welcomed by women in Lebanon.
"The Lebanese woman, same as the Arab woman, prefers to ride with a woman driver. Many families also contracted with us to take their children to school and bring them home," she added.
Yaghi said that while pink taxis are reserved to women, they will transport men as well, "but on condition that their women are with them in the car".
The drivers of "Banat Taxi" are distinguished by their uniform that consists of navy blue pants, a white shirt, a pink tie and a pink rose pinned in their hair.
Yaghi said the customer base is very diverse.
"We have university graduates, school students and female patients who are receiving long-term treatment in the hospital. These clients have contracted with us on the basis of a monthly subscription, and renew as needed. Added to them are our expatriate, Arab and foreign customers who reserve their car before their arrival, and we would be waiting for them at the airport," she said.
Al-Shorfa accompanied driver Nawal Farhat, 40, while she drove sisters Jesse, 13, and Romy, 8, from school in the Manarah area in western Beirut to their home in the Rabieh area.
"My commitment to accompany Jesse and Romy requires being in front of their home at 6:30, and at 12:45 in the afternoon in the summer in front of their school." She added, "I love driving more and more."
Farhat is harassed by some male drivers occasionally, but she does not respond to them, she said. "There are some male taxi drivers who support me and encourage me," she added.
Jesse said she was happy to travel in the "Pink Taxi".
"My friends envy me because I come to school in this car," she said.
Women taxi drivers in Lebanon who provide service only to women is a positive thing. There is no problem if there are taxi offices for women which employ women drivers. We know that there are many conservative families that need women drivers to take them to women’s parties, to hairdressers or to go shopping, in order to feel at ease and to have some privacy. We also notice that there are women photographers working in private women’s parties. I hope that such offices spread in all the Arab countries, since there is no harm in it. On the contrary, it gives women more freedom.
The woman has entered most of the fields of private enterprise and because the woman represents half of society, it is not strange for women to work as taxi drivers. This is a good and honorable job and I encourage it, as it allows the woman to make living instead of taking the wrong path, which angers God the Almighty. Hence, allowing women to work as taxi drivers in Lebanon to serve women only is praiseworthy. Lebanon is an open country and I do not think that the woman would face any difficulty, because the Lebanese society does not oppose such a step, as openness and acceptance of the woman working is one of the main characteristics of the Lebanese society. In addition, the Lebanese woman is strong enough to handle all the problems that may face her at this job. Moreover, the fact that she will only deal with women will keep her safe from many problems that would have happened if she dealt with male customers. In short, I believe that this is an honorable job, and I salute any woman who does honorable work to make a living and provide for her family, which includes elders and children.
There are many impermissible issues when women drive taxis or drive cars in general: They will be exposed to abuse in the streets and markets by many people. They will give up modesty, and do not forget that modesty is part of faith. The street will be their home and they will stay in the streets longer than in their homes with their children and husbands or families. They will get out whenever they want to and come back whenever they want to, under the pretext of modernity. However, they will cause sedition wherever they go, at traffic lights, checkpoints, gas stations and tire stations, and when standing with traffic policemen; if there is a breakdown in the car, they will need someone to help them. In all these cases, don't they run the risk to be subjected to harassment? Tell me then, which is better for women: to be subjected to harassment by taxi drivers or to be taxi drivers themselves?
I support this idea and I hope to be more involved and effective. I hope there are many such offices; please write the phone number of this office. Thanks.
It is a great and a respectable idea for the status of women in Arab society and to protect them against the abuses that do not befit the status of Arab women. We support this cultural project, which is good for both working women, as a decent job, and for women who can benefit from this service freely and without fear or concern, when using the taxis allocated for women. I actually encourage women to engage in this profession for women only, and I thought, too, if I am to work in one of our Arab countries, I will choose this work for women and for women only.
Many people seem to be happy about this issue and encourage it, but in fact, women are still in danger when they work in this field as a taxi driver. God is our suffices us and He is our only supporter! Where is your jealousy for our women? Is it safer for the passenger or for the driver? There is still some danger if an evil woman rides the taxi and asks the driver to take her to a certain place where she has already arranged with some bad men to abuse her. How can the female driver defend herself in such a situation? How can she keep wandering in her taxi all night? Perhaps some evil men block her way while she is going home and abuse her. We suffer from the problem of harassment by taxi drivers. Actually, the religion gives solutions to such problems, but you reject them under the name of progress, civilization and freedom. The Islamic Law states that it is impermissible for a woman to be in one place with a stranger in the absence of one of her unmarriageable relatives. In the presence of such a relative, it will be very difficult for anyone to insult or harass the woman. This is modernity and its consequences. Enjoy freedom, but do not complain when you are subjected to harassment, because you are the ones who are looking for it. We see women today as taxi drivers, and tomorrow we will see them working as mechanics. It is their argument that they are seeking to make a living, but that is a bad excuse, because God says: "So walk in the paths thereof and eat of His providence." I call on women to look for another job because this job is dangerous for them and for others. I think they are competing with men in all jobs leaving men responsible for nurturing the children at home. The issue of female taxi drivers is proof of what I say.
This is very good and assures the women on their life journey, away from the lies of men and their attempts to seduce the customers into adultery. May God the Almighty bless them and guide their efforts in this respect.
By Almighty God, it is a very nice idea that will make us feel safety for our decent women. How was this idea absent from our minds a long time ago? Decent women will ride in taxis with decent female drivers. It will protect women against the absurdity of some taxi drivers.
It is a solution that will spare us harassment by indecent taxi drivers. We wish they could find a similar solution for those indecent pedestrians.
