A nine-ton red granite pylon thought to be a piece of Cleopatra's temple pillar was raised from the sea off the coast of Alexandria, BBC News reported Thursday (December 17th). The stone is believed to be from a temple to Isis, the goddess of fertility and magic and was quarried at least two thousand years ago, 700 miles south of the underwater temple site. Archaeologists believe an earthquake in the 4th century sunk the city. Egypt hopes to construct an underwater museum around the site to attract tourists to its northern coast, AP reported.
