Three of Egypt’s most prominent religious figures voiced support for a decision to curb the wearing of the niqab, or face veil, in university dormitories and examination rooms, Reuters reported Wednesday (December 23rd). The two clerics, Mufti Ali Gomaa and Hamdi Zakzouk, minister of religious endowments, supported Sheikh Mohamed Tantawi, head of Al-Azhar University, who said in October that the niqab is a social habit with no basis in Islam.

Tantawi told the official MENA news agency that the face veil is a "form of extremism". But an Egyptian court recently ruled that banning the niqab is unconstitutional, violates personal freedom and the right to practice one’s faith, reported Gulf News on December 15.
