Citing the treatment of protesters last month as the deciding factor, Mohammed Reza Heydari, Iran's counsel in Norway, has resigned, Norway's NRK TV reported Wednesday (January 6th). "It was the Iranian authorities' treatment of demonstrators during the Christmas week that made me realize I couldn't continue," Heydari said.

Opposition websites are saying that he defected and is seeking asylum. But Iranian government sources dismissed the report. "The report is baseless. A diplomat returns to the country when his mission is finished in another country," Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told Reuters.
