The Qatari government is forming a committee to oversee importers, wholesalers and retailers selling essential items to consumers, The Peninsula reported Wednesday (January 6th). Before increasing prices, anyone selling basic items must acquire permission from the Ministry of Business and Trade. The move comes as the government begins to study which household goods should be subsidized and to ensure that prices are kept in check, the paper reported.
Prices are high in Qatar because of a shortage of commercial space. Rents for shops are high and this affects prices, said Jassem al-Thani, director of the Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Business and Trade.
