The Yemeni government believes that the attempted Nigerian plane bomber Umar Abdulmutallab spent time in the al-Qaeda stronghold of Shabwa in east Yemen, possibly meeting radical cleric Anwar al-Aulaqi, the deputy prime minister for defence and security said Thursday (January 7th). Al-Aulaqi is believed to be in hiding in Shabwa.
"There is no doubt that he met and had contacts with al-Qaeda elements in Shabwa, perhaps with Anwar al-Aulaqi," Rashad al-Alimi told AFP. Abdulmutallab overstayed a student visa and disappeared for months. Yemen is currently investigating his activities during that time. Al-Alimi said he believed the Nigerian was recruited by al-Qaeda while studying in London sometime between 2005 and 2008.
