Recently discovered tombs near Egypt's pyramids reveal that workers who built the great monuments were free men, not slaves, BBC News reported on Monday (January 11th). The dried-mud bricks used to build the pyramids of Khufu and Khafre are 4,500 years old. The tombs around the site are the first to be found next to kings, and were for workers who died during while constructing the pyramids. "If they were slaves, they would not have been able to build their tombs beside their king," said Egypt's antiquities chief Zahi Hawass in a statement.
