Lebanon's Interior Minister Ziyad Baroud will submit a proposal to parliament next week for a temporary 30 % quota for women in politics, the Daily Star reported Saturday (January 16th). Not enough is being done to ensure the participation of women in politics, as candidates and voters, said Aman Chaarani, the president of the Lebanese Council of Women. In the June 2009 legislative elections, only 12 women campaigned in a field of 587 candidates. "There is schizophrenia in Lebanon between what we say and what we do," said Baroud. "A lot is being said about the rights of women but little has changed."
