Mohammed's marriage to a 9-year-old girl 14 centuries ago does not justify men marrying children today, a senior Saudi cleric said. The comment, by a member of the Council of Senior Ulema, follows the marriage of an 11-year-old girl to an 80-year-old man that caused outrage among human rights activists in Saudi Arabia, Al Arabiya reported on Thursday (January 21st). The conditions are not the same as they were in the prophet's time, said Abdullah al-Manie. The girl's father received $22,000 as a dowry for his daughter.
