The British Museum's discovery of two clay shards that apparently fit the ancient Cyrus cylinder worries Iranian government officials who believe the museum will use the latest finding to delay lending the cylinder to Tehran, The National reported Thursday (January 21st).
The cylinder dates back to 539 BC during the era of Cyrus the Great who founded Persia's ancient empire. It was written after he conquered Babylon and freed Jews and other captives. The clay fragments are inscribed with text matching the nine-inch-long cylinder. Iran says it will cut off relations with the museum if it fails to send the cylinder.
