Saudi Arabia’s human rights commission is seeking to obtain a divorce for a 12-year-old girl forcibly married to an octogenarian, Al Arabiya reported on Tuesday (February 9th). The commission hired a lawyer to petition for divorce, thereby hoping to create a judicial precedent that would ban marriages to girls under the age of 18. Saudi Arabia has no minimum age for marriage, and fathers are granted full control over their daughters. The girl’s mother withdrew the divorce petition she filed on behalf of her daughter, but the reasons have not been made public.
