Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh announced on television a ceasefire in fighting against Houthi rebels in the north of the country to take effect from midnight (2300 GMT) on Thursday (February 11th), AFP reported. The Yemen government and the Houthis had been negotiating a possible ceasefire over the past week. The rebels have been fighting Yemeni troops since 2004 but they became engaged on a new front with Saudi Arabia in November following accusations they had killed a border guard and occupied two small villages.
