Iran told the UN's Human Rights Council that it fully respects its citizens' human rights, Reuters reported Monday (February 15th). Iran is in "full compliance with the relevant international commitments it has made to safeguard human rights," Tehran's representative told the council, which is conducting a comprehensive review of the human rights records of all UN member states. Mohammad Larijani, Secretary General of Iran's High Council for Human Rights, said criticism of Iran's record is a way to exert pressure on the country over its nuclear program. Western countries use the human-rights issue "as a tool to apply pressure against us and to advance certain ulterior political moves," he said.
