Impoverished Jordanian women believe that social stigmas and taboos prevent them from becoming financially viable, a new study reveals. Poverty is highest in households headed by women, according to a study conducted by the official Coordination Commission for Social Solidarity. More than 60% of poor women are widows. Only 1% of underprivileged women were found to be workers earning a steady income. The main causes of poverty among women are early marriage and leaving school early, said researcher Ablaa Weshah. "Females born in underprivileged families are most likely to stay poor," she said.
