Iran is pushing China to resist the pressure of world powers to mount a new sanctions regime against Tehran, Reuters reported Tuesday (March 9th). "We are hopeful that China will not be affected by others' demands and will have its own independent policy," said Ramin Mehmanparast, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman. "We hope such independent, powerful countries will block bullying powers," he added.

China and Iran maintain strong business ties, but China approved earlier sanctions that were more limited than those currently under consideration. World powers are looking at ways to contain Iran, which is unilaterally moving ahead with a nuclear programme which Tehran claims is for civilian use.
