A group of Lebanese protesters staged a mock wedding in downtown Beirut to draw attention to the fact that civil marriage is still illegal, Reuters reported Friday (March 19th). The female demonstrators wore white gowns while men wore suits. They marched to the parliament to hand over a petition urging recognition of civil marriage.

Personal status laws in Lebanon are governed by each citizen's religious authorities. Individuals are prohibited from marrying if one partner fails to convert to the spouse's religion. Many interfaith couples fly to nearby Cyprus for a civil ceremony and then register the marriage in Lebanon. "We don't want to travel outside to get married anymore," said Diana Assaf, the event's spokeswoman. "This is a very simple right," she added.
