A Sanaa court granted child bride Sally al-Sabahi's request and allowed her a divorce, the Yemen Observer reported Sunday (March 28th). Now 12 years-old, al-Sabhari and her lawyer petitioned a court last month to allow the girl to divorce the man her father forced her to marry two years ago.
In a case that attracted international coverage, the girl spoke to reporters after the procedure was finalized. "I feel I am free now," al-Sabhari said. She thanked everyone involved with dissolving her marriage and said she would like to continue her studies. Her father was required to return the dowry he received for his daughter. Her experience with marriage has left al-Sabhari with little desire to ever try again. "I don't want to marry anymore. I hate marriage, and I will not marry until I die," she said.
