The global financial crisis and a crackdown on illegal workers led to an exodus of Asian workers who made up a significant part of Oman's gold trade, The National reported Wednesday (March 31st). Sales dropped by 15%, said gold-store owner Adel Sadiq of his business. Sales slid this year "by another 10% when a lot of illegal workers were sent home", said Mohan Das, manager of a second gold shop. More than 75,000 expatriate workers have left Oman in the past nine months.
