Egypt is joining with 25 countries to demand the return of antiquities that were stolen from their countries of origin, AP reported Thursday (April 8th). Zahi Hawass, the head of Egypt's antiquities department, said at a press conference that he would "make their lives miserable" if museums ignore his orders.
Last year, Egypt broke off ties temporarily with the Louvre until the French museum returned artefacts to Cairo. "Greece was fighting alone. Italy was fighting along," Hawass said. "Now for the first time we are united." Egypt is demanding the return of a Nefertiti bust currently in Berlin's Egyptian Museum in addition to the Rosetta Stone, now at the British Museum in London.
