Yemen's General Labour Union (GLU) is calling for an all-encompassing strike on May 15th to protest low wages and government neglect of worker demands, the Yemen Times reported Tuesday (May 11th). The GLU wants public and private sector employees, with the exception of emergency service workers, to begin striking for one hour on May 15th and gradually build up to a complete work stoppage by May 24th.
The strike is a response to government intransigence in negotiating with workers, said Mohammed al-Jedri, the head of the GLU. The union wants a $300 minimum monthly wage and lower income taxes.
