Archaeologists found 57 tombs containing mummies in Fayoum, about 100 km south of Cairo, wire services reported Sunday (May 23rd). The oldest of the tombs dates back to 2750 B.C. The mummies found in the tombs' wooden painted sarcophagi were wrapped in linen and painted with religious verses from the Book of the Dead and ancient gods. The discovery provides historians with new information about how ancient Egyptians practiced religion, said a statement from Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities.
