Iraq’s Supreme Court asked the election commission to clarify some legal issues related to a candidate elected to the parliament, Reuters reported Thursday (May 27th). The move could delay the final certification of results of the March 7 parliamentary elections. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s State of Law coalition has inquired into Furat Saeed, a Basra candidate from the Iraqi National Alliance, an ally of the State of Law. The unspecified "legal issue" filed by the State of Law will hopefully be resolved soon, said Amel al-Birqdar, deputy head of the Iraqi High Electoral Commission.

The results that were requested by one of the winning lists in the elections are important proof of the fairness and cleanness of the electoral commission, and of the fact that the election was valid and not forged in the interest of a person or a coalition. This is proved by the results of the manual recount and sorting carried out by the elements of the Electoral Commission, and their efforts to end the manual recount and sorting in a short time in order to present the results to the Federal Court will be approved in order to form the government. The role played by the High Electoral Commission in Iraq was a major and positive role, since it helped in calming souls and applying democracy and freedom in a real and effective way, because it was not one-sided with any of the parties before the beginning of the elections, or at the time of the elections. It had its observers, who were in the voting centers, and made sure to provide full freedom for all the citizens to choose the candidate whom they expected to bring about a bright future for Iraq. Then, after it had provided all the required efforts to complete the counting and sorting in a short time in order to announce the results, it kept the observers on throughout this period. After all this, it was requested to recount the vote for Baghdad city; it also kept the local and international observers on, as well as the observers of the political entities. And it carried out a manual recount and sorting very quickly, and announced the results, which were identical with the results announced the first time.
