Qat prices increased, and Yemen's ministry of defence is citing the World Cup as the reason, wire services reported Saturday (June 12th).
Vendors of the narcotic leaf say that a bunch of lower quality leaves doubled in price to nearly $5. "World fever has hiked the price of qat," read a headline on the ministry's 26sept.net website. Higher quality leaves, which sell for $10 a bunch, are now selling at close to $17.
The ministry said that afternoon matches occur when men typically sit and chew qat.
Qat has many negative effects on people who chew it, from endangering their health to economic impacts resulting from its high prices to making those who deal with it unable to reason and act rationally, thus leading him to commit actions beyond his control that may harm him and others. Yemenis used to use qat on all occasions, considering that it is a plant, not a drug, which they grow everywhere. We notice a rise in the use of this drug in their gatherings and meetings for any reason, and its prices have also increased during this period, coinciding with the start of the World Cup matches. This is a result of increased demand, especially in cafes and gatherings, because the games are shown on big TV screens, and they are accompanied by enthusiasm and an increased demand for qat to enjoy the time they spend. But the best thing for the Yemeni youth to do, is moving on to discuss matters of sport, for example, and to analyze the results of matches, and to talk about how to improve the Yemeni team in such meetings, so that they back away from the consumption of qat, which is harmful to their health, destroys society and makes it always the slowest at keeping pace with the development in the world.
The government needs to ban the usage and consumption of qat in Yemen.
Qat is considered one of the most dangerous drugs, and it is used in Yemen by many people, because it is not forbidden. It is a type of plant; so they do not consider it a drug which makes people lose their minds and has negative effects on public health in society and its economic development.
