A new $600 million museum to house Egypt's antiquities is under construction and will house more than 100,000 artifacts in two years, wire services reported Monday (June 14th).
The complex is being built on 120 acres at the base of Giza's pyramids and will replace the site in downtown Cairo where the rundown antiquities museum is visited by millions of tourists every year.
The new museum will feature a conservation center to repair damaged artifacts and an archive where each item will be catalogued electronically. A partial opening of the museum is scheduled for 2012.
