A dozen Iraqi civil society groups have filed suit with the Federal Supreme Court against acting Parliament Speaker Fuad Massum in an effort to end the political stalemate blocking the formation of a ruling government, wire services reported Monday (August 16th).
The special-interest and charity groups accuse Massum of violating the constitution by opening the first session of parliament without any indication that a new speaker will be elected.
"We call on the Federal Court to require the defendant to end the open session… or dissolve the Council of Representatives and carry out new elections," the civic groups said in a statement.
Massum conceded the point, saying the open session is a constitutional violation "and I will stand before the court to defend my stance, and I will accept any ruling the court will make."
