Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has pledged that a new commission that he will head will explore ways to control the spread of weapons among civilians, wire services reported Thursday (August 26th).

The Lebanese cabinet on Wednesday agreed to form the commission following armed clashes on Tuesday evening in Beirut between members of Hizbullah and supporters of the pro-Syrian group Al-Ahbash, also known as the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects.

The clashes left four people dead. No individuals have been arrested yet, according to NOW Lebanon.

Commission members include Hariri, Defence Minister Elias Murr and Interior Minister Ziad Baroud. They are charged with submitting recommendations to the Cabinet at an unspecified date.

"Armed factions must not continue to function in Beirut or other regions in such a matter," Hariri said in a statement.

Hariri's Future Bloc released a statement Thursday calling on authorities to arrest and prosecute anyone carrying illegal weapons "starting from Beirut to the airport road".
