Egypt’s ruling National Democratic Party is supporting incumbent Hosni Mubarak's candidacy for president next year but confirmed that his son Gamal Mubarak is also on the party list as a contender, Reuters reported on Wednesday (August 25th).

"The name of Gamal Mubarak is one among others to contest the coming presidential election in 2011," said Ali Hillal, an NDP spokesman. "But until now, the only proposed party candidate for the presidency is President Hosni Mubarak, and there is no discussion about any other name now because it would be premature," Hillal added.

President Hosni Mubarak, 82, has not confirmed whether he will run or not. He has been president since 1981. The head of the NDP said that the party backs another term for Hosni Mubarak. "We are just waiting for a decision from the president himself," said Safwat Sherif, secretary-general of the party.
