Iraq will hold its first census since 1997 on October 24th whether a ruling government is in place or not, said Mehdi al-Alak, head of the Central Organization for Statistics and Information Technology. The census was postponed once and will not be put off a second time, he told Reuters on Thursday (August 26th).
"Our preparations are in the final stages, we are heading toward implementing the census," said al-Alak. "There is no decision to postpone it and we hope no decision is made to do so," he added.
An initial estimate of the population indicated that Iraq's population is 32 million, al-Alak said. The census will include the Kurdish region and will not ask about one's religious sect.
