Yemen's president offered a warning to southern separatists seeking to secede but also opened the door to talks, AFP reported Tuesday (March 9th). They will be defeated, President Ali Abdullah Saleh told senior Yemeni military officials, but he will listen to their demands. "If there are any political demands, they are welcome," he said. "Come to dialogue." Saleh said that committees would be formed on the ground in the south to discuss their complaints. Southern activists have stepped up a campaign in recent weeks to demand independence as the national economy worsens.
