Fighters from Hizb-e-Islami, an armed Afghan group, have surrendered to authorities in the northern Afghanistan province of Baghlan, The Daily Times of Pakistan reported Monday (March 8th). Scores of militants, including 11 commanders and 68 fighters, defected as a two-day clash between the group and the Taliban left 79 people dead, police said. The two groups, who were once allies, fought against each other over control for farmland.

“The government is trying to rescue the Hizb-e-Islami men surrounded by Taliban. We are not launching an operation for the sake of civilian casualties,” said provincial police chief Muhammad Kabir Andarabi said.
