Following successful experiments with women-only taxis in the UAE and Kuwait, a new enterprise in Cairo will offer a similar service, AFP reported Tuesday (March 9th). The taxis are one way to isolate women from rampant sexual harassment on the streets of Egypt's capital. A private cab company, Cairo Cab, will offer separate cars for women.
Eighty percent of the company's 300 daily calls are from women, said Mahmoud Kamel of Cairo Cab. Egypt's female deputy speaker of parliament called for a law last December to protect women from public harassment that had reached "extreme" levels.
