Saudi Arabia is looking to monitor messages sent through BlackBerry's popular messenger program, ITP.net reported Sunday (March 7th). The article quoted a source close to the Communication and Information Technology Commission as saying that the decision comes amidst increased concerns that Islamist militants are communicating via the BlackBerry Messenger network. The Arab press recently reported that the Commission requested permission from Research In Motion (RIM), BlackBerry's parent company, to monitor traffic.
In a statement, RIM said that the company "operates in more than 170 countries and respects the regulatory requirements of governments." Officials at the Saudi commission refused to comment.
