Iran jails more journalists than any country in the world, according to the press watchdog Committee to Protect Journalists. The crackdown on Iranian journalists in recent months has sparked the growth of an underground movement of professional and citizen journalists writing and posting online using pseudonyms or no names at all, AP reported Thursday (March 11th). They may be based inside or outside Iran. At least 100 have fled the country since the disputed presidential elections last June.
At least 52 Iranian journalists and bloggers are currently in prison on ambiguous charges, according to a report by the committee. "A very, very bitter and black period awaits journalists," said Reza Valizadeh, a journalist who used to work for state television and fled to Paris following the election clampdown.
