New legislation in Abu Dhabi will give the power to evict tenants and raise rents, The National reported Thursday (March 11th). The property law is expected to go into effect later in the year. It safeguards the 5 percent ceiling on rent increases, but property owners will now be able to evict tenants at the end of the lease and accept new tenants with no limits on the rent. The law also strips what is currently an existing right of tenants to renew leases for five years at a time with a cap of 5 % rent increase each year. Rents in Abu Dhabi more than doubled between 2006 and 2008.
