The Ministry of Economy banned sales of caffeinated energy drinks to anyone under 16 and violators will face fines or prosecution, Emirates 24/7 reported Friday (September 3rd).
The ban will go into effect October 29th, following a Cabinet decision to restrict sales of the beverages.
Pregnant women, heart patients, and anyone with an allergy to caffeine will also be forbidden from buying the drinks, said Hasihim al-Nuaimi, director of the Higher Committee for the Protection of Consumers.
The measures are being implemented following complaints to the health authorities that the caffeinated beverages have resulted in deaths.
